There’s a battle waging in the American trucking industry, but it isn’t a public spectacle. Nor is it something that’s covered on the front pages. It just plays out quietly – one purchase decision at a time – in fleet offices and parts counters and online shopping carts across the country. Only the outcome of this fight matters more than people realize. Because what’s at stake isn’t just about who wins a part sale it’s about the quality of brakes you install.

At NeoBrake, we’ve been watching this conflict unfold for quite some time.

We’ve watched cheap Chinese brake components undercut honest manufacturers on price. We’ve watched artificially low costs reshape purchasing habits across an entire industry. And we’ve watched (in alarming disbelief) quality become a secondary consideration in a product category where quality is the only consideration that should ever matter. But we’ve decided that watching just isn’t enough anymore.

It’s time to defend our way of doing things.

What We’re Defending

Our way isn’t complicated. It never has been. We use the best available raw materials, formulate our friction material with premium resins and zero filler, and build our lightweight cast iron brake shoes to structural standards that hold up under the most demanding real-world conditions the road can throw at it. Which is why we don’t make a budget line. We offer tiered lines of superior quality depending on the application – brakes that routinely outperform the competition in each of their class.

That was our philosophy when we first opened our doors in Oak Creek, Wisconsin in 1988, and it remains our guiding principle today. Nearly 40 years of the same standard. Nearly 40 years of the same refusal to compromise. Not because it was always the easiest business decision. Because it was the right one.

What We’re Defending Against

The threat to higher standards is real, and it’s well documented. Cheap Chinese brake components built with inferior raw materials and cheap fillers have invaded the U.S. aftermarket. They wear faster, they perform unpredictably under heat and load, and they damage brake drums through abrasive contact and shorten the service life across the entire wheel-end assembly. And if that wasn’t troubling enough, they have been entering the market through fraudulent transshipment channels and anonymous e-commerce platforms specifically designed to avoid the scrutiny that would expose them.i

The 2025 inspection data underscore the consequences. Inspectors promptly removed one in six trucks for brake violations during CVSA Brake Safety Week. Twenty-five trucks failed to meet the federal minimum braking efficiency standard entirely. Brake problems are a contributing factor in 29% of all large truck crashes. And nearly three-quarters of the people killed in those crashes are not truck drivers. They are everyone else on the road.

This is what a race to the bottom looks like when the product being cheapened is the one responsible for stopping 80,000 pounds of steel and freight at highway speed. So, it’s a question we cannot go without asking, what have we come to as an industry?

Why Quality Is Worth Fighting For

We are under no illusion that defending quality is easy in a market that has been conditioned to lead with price. The pressure on fleets and owner-operators to cut costs is real. We feel it too in our own business every day. But some pressures are worth pushing back against. And this is one of them – because too much is at stake to remain silent.

Because quality friction material that lasts longer and performs better isn’t just a superior product. It’s fewer trucks out of service, fewer drum replacements, and fewer breakdowns on the side of an interstate highway. Or it’s a loaded semi that stops when the driver needs it to stop – on a wet road, at the bottom of a grade, with traffic backed up ahead.

It’s a standard that says human life is worth more than the difference between a cheap lining and a good one.

We’re Not Changing, We’re Doubling Down

NeoBrake isn’t interested in competing at the bottom. We never were. Our NeoKinetic Friction Technology™, our Matrix NeoCast™ brake shoe, and our nonabrasive NB1088 TFT linings are not products built to win a price war. They are products built to win the only argument that matters: What happens when the brakes are called upon to do their job.

We built this company on the belief that quality is worth defending. That people are worth protecting. That the road is worth making safer one brake job at a time.

Nearly 40 years in, we’re more convinced of that than ever. And we’re just getting started.

So, what’s stopping you?
